Be sure to watch this year's UK's Strongest Man on Channel 5. Day 1 aired early hours Thursday 1st Dec at 00:45 - 01:35. Day 2 airs next Wednesday 7th Dec 23:50 - 00:40, with the final being on early hours Tuesday 13th December 00:50 - 01:40. This is organized by the UKSC (UK Strength Council) federation. As mentioned below, there are now 3 federations each with their own "Britain's Stongest Man." This year, Mark Felix has already won the IFSA BSM and Mick Gosling has won the TWI BSM, neither of which have had television coverage. Judging by the difficulty of the events in the UK's, i'd say that the winner of this UK's Strongest Man is the "true" Britain's Strongest Man.
Martin has also recently written an aritcle covering the split between the federations of British strongmen and strength athletes. For many years the systems of tournament and competition between British strongmen has been simple, but divides opening between the major players in the federations has left much to be questioned.
This article will help the clarify the current British strongman standpoint, with the major federations clearly defined. There is a brief history and the article will answer many of the questions currently being asked. Also, apologies on taking so long to get this published!
The weekend gone I attended the strongman training weekend mentioned below. Loads of tips were learnt. This year I am putting strongman events at the rear of the gym. I would strongly encourage members to have a go at this, just ask me.
On 30th May I am entering the Barnard Castle Strength Show, run by the UK Strength Council. This is an open show and occurs a few days after the qualifiers for The UK's Strongest Man. The events are truck pull, railway walk, log lift (100kg), lorry load and pole push. This week I am getting a log and some farmer's walks made up in the gym. If anyone wants to try them then just ask. I aim to get my body weight as close to 24 stone as possible by the end of may. I currently weigh in at 22 stone 6lb.
There is a strong man training weekend to be held over the weekend of the 16th January 2005. Most events will be available complete with coaching. The cost is £100, with a £25 deposit payable up front. Anyone interested please contact me for an entry form.
